Abstract: In order to study the mechanisms and effectiveness of pool fire extinction with water mist produced by effervescent atomizer, an effervescent atomization water mist fire suppression system was developed and a series of experiments were conducted under varying conditions. In the course of experiments, atomization media is nitrogen and fire source is a pan with diesel oil as fuel. The water mist characteristics were determined by a LDV/APV system. Before and after the application of water mist, some K-type thermocouples along the pool centerline were used to measure the flame temperature. The experimental results show that water mist and nitrogen both have effect on fire suppression process. When water mist of appropriate flow rate is applied, diesel fire can be extinguished in a short time. And at a given supply pressure, there is an optimum water flow rate.
