Abstract: Fire disasters of the widely used cable systems will bring great loss and damage to the industries. The objective of this paper is to analyze the detailed heat transfer of the over heated cables and to propose a convenient monitoring technology for cable systems. The theoretical analyses are conducted for over heated three-core cables with the cross section area 95, 240 and 630 mm(2), respectively. Some corresponding experimental measurements are also carried out for the cables with a simulated over heated joint using an electric heater. Finally, the influence of the environmental temperatures on the heat transfer of the over heated cable is analyzed. It is shown that the experimental results match well the theoretical results. The results also indicate that the temperature rise on cable surface is an effective alarm criterion for the auto-alarm monitoring system no matter in cold winter or in hot summer. An auto-alarm monitoring system based on the heat transfer model was successfully used for the cable system in the Anqin Petroleum and Chemical Corporation.
