Abstract: An experiment to study the discharge of tropodegradable halocarbon C(3)F(3)CH(2)Br (1323) fire suppression agent from a pressurized vessel orientated downward affects the fire suppression efficiency. A photo-electric flame detector and a solenoid valve were used as a rapid release for discharging an agent from the vessel to the fire scene. Experimental observations were made on the discharge characteristics of 1323 influencing the fire extinguishant dosage and extinguishing time, which was proposed as potential candidates for replacement of halon 1301 (CF(3)Br) as fire suppressant. Various parameters that could influence the discharge process were studied. These parameters were: (1) nozzle diameter, (2) initial operation pressure. In general trend, the fire suppressant supply quantity and extinguishing time of 1323 decreased with increasing initial operation pressure, and the initial operation pressure influenced suppressant dosage and extinguishing time slightly when the pressure beyond 0.9MPa. The fire extinguishant dosage decreased with reducing nozzle diameter, and correspondingly the fire extinguishing time shortened with reducing nozzle diameter. But when the nozzle diameter reduced to 0.4 mm, the fire extinguishant dosage and extinguishing time increased again.
