Abstract: Backdraft is a fire phenomenon in a vitiated building where the hot gas rapidly combusts due to abruptly supplying abundant fresh air after combustion with lack of oxygen or even smoldering. Gravity current is prerequisite for occurrence of backdraft. Salt water model is an important study method of gravity current. In this paper, a series of reduced scale salt water experiments using flow visualization were conducted. The compartment (0.4mx0.1mx0.1m) was fitted with a variety of ceiling opening geometries. The effects of different opening geometries were compared and discussed.
