Abstract: A combined field-zone-network (FZN) model which is based on the coupling of field, zone and network models and proposed by the State Key Lab of Fire Science of China is modified with a volume-conservation method and is used to simulate two building fire cases. General discussions of the merits and limitations of field, zone and network models are given, and the necessity is pointed out to be due to the developing of the FZN model to tackle the problem of predicting fire processes for high-rise complex buildings. The results of the predictions are reasonable and promising. Some areas of this FZN model are also identified as requiring further improvement. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
