Project Title: Research on pool fire characteristics in closed compartment with ceiling opening
Principal Investigator: Prof. Lushouxiang

Project Period:2010-2012
Abstract:
Machinery spaces are compartments with ceiling opening. Fires in machinery spaces are usually restricted and unable to involve flesh air, resulting in self-extinction due to oxygen starvation. Fire behaviors in machinery spaces are remarkable different from those in building rooms with vertical openings. The goal of this project is to learn the self-extinction behaviors, and to reveal the self-extinction mechanism as well as criteria on self-extinction. How the sizes of ceiling opening, fire sizes, compartment geometry and fire location affect the self-extinction are to be studied experimentally. The duration from ignition to self-extinction and changing laws of fire parameter are to be clarified. Based on systematically analyzing the relation between the fire parameters, fire sizes, ceiling opening sizes, compartment volume and other factors, theoretical models on fire duration and prediction models on fire parameters are to be developed.
