A research group on safety of clean energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems is being established at SKLFS, led by Professor Jiang Xi, who has recently been recruited to USTC as part of the "The Recruitment Program of Global Experts". Professor Jiang was awarded his PhD degree at USTC in 1994, who also won the "Guo Moruo Scholarship" of that year. Since 1997, he has been working at several institutions in the UK, most recently as a Chair in Energy Use and Transport at Lancaster University. In his research field of Energy & Flow Physics, he has an international profile with more than 100 journal and conference publications, including top journals in the field such as Progress in Energy and Combustion Science, SKLFS, Combustion and Flame, and Physics of Fluids. He is the leading author of a Taylor & Francis book "Numerical Techniques for Direct and Large-Eddy Simulations", published in 2009.
His research group at USTC will be carrying out leading-edge research on safety of clean energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems, including hydrogen combustion and prevention of leakage from CO2 transport and storage systems. As a bridge leading to the future low-carbon economy, CCS could play a significant role in reducing pollutants emissions from combustion of fossil fuels. Using multi-scale numerical modelling and high-resolution monitoring techniques, his group is in the process of establishing research activities that could potentially lead to enhanced safe operation of clean energy and CCS systems.
