Abstract: The roles of biomass burning as a global phenomenon and as a contributor to the global budgets of atmospheric gases and particulates are of much importance. To assess the environmental and health impacts of compartment fires, knowledge of the gaseous and particulate emissions such as CO2, CO, CH4 Produced in the fire and released into the atmosphere is required. Yet, it is ambiguous how the detailed compounds of biomass pyrolysis from fires are released to the environment under varied enviromental temperatures. In order, to explore the effects of temperature on gaseous and particulate formation from forest fires, paulownia wood has been selected as typical biomass materials'. The compounds of emissions are simulated experimentally in a helium atmosphere and analyzed by GC/MS method. The identification of separated components are based on GC/MS retention index values and comparing the fragmentation patterns with those reported in the literature and library search (Wiley 7.1 library). The relative content are identified based on GC peak area normalization with the data processing system. When the pyrolysis temperature is at 130 degrees C, 360 degrees C and 550 degrees C, 54, 192 and 154 compounds are identified respectively. The impacts of temperature on gaseous and particulate formation are discussed.
